Gamboa, 29, was a useful asset for the Triple-A Norfolk Tides. He is one of few pitchers in the minors or majors that throws a knuckleball. His fastball is also known to reach 90 mph, creating a rare combination of pitches.
Orioles manager Buck Showalter spoke about Gamboa in the team’s pre-game press conference.
“He was on the radar here,” Showalter told reporters. “So it’s unfortunate.”
Gamboa has been in the Orioles farm system since 2009, spending time in Delmarva, Aberdeen, Bowie, Frederick and Norfolk. He is 4-5 with a 4.06 ERA in 12 starts this season.
He recently tied a career high with eight strikeouts against the Durham Bulls.
